How to Obtain a Certificate of Algerian Nationality

The Certificate of Nationality is a crucial document. Learn how to request it through the Ministry of Justice section of dzds.dz.

The Certificate of Algerian Nationality (Certificat de Nationalité Algérienne) is a foundational document. It is the absolute legal proof of citizenship, required for creating your first biometric ID card, joining the military, or taking on high-level government employment. Thankfully, obtaining it no longer requires a lengthy court visit, provided your familial links are clearly established in the digital registry.

The Digital Request Process

The Certificate of Nationality is issued by the Ministry of Justice, not the municipality. Therefore, it is requested in a similar manner to the Casier Judiciaire.

  1. Log In: Sign in to your Bawabatic account on dzds.dz.
  2. Navigate to Justice Services: Select the "Ministère de la Justice" tab.
  3. Select 'Certificat de Nationalité': Choose the option to request a nationality certificate.
  4. Validation: The system will automatically check your civil status records and your parents' records (which are linked via your NIN). If the algorithm confirms your lineage establishes your right to Algerian nationality, the document will be generated.

The Importance of the "Livret de Famille" Link

The automated system relies heavily on the digitized family linkages. It checks your birth certificate against your parents'. If your father or grandfather's records have not been fully digitized, or if there is a discrepancy in names across generations, the digital portal will halt the process.

If the portal cannot automatically verify your nationality based on the digitized records, it will issue an error. In this scenario, you must physically visit the tribunal with the traditional paper dossier (your birth certificate, your father's birth certificate, and sometimes your grandfather's) so a judge can manually verify the lineage and issue the certificate.

Using the Digital Certificate

Like all documents from dzds.dz, the Certificate of Nationality is delivered as a PDF with a secure QR code. When you print this document and include it in your dossier (for example, at the Daira for a passport application), the administrative officer will scan the code to verify that the Ministry of Justice indeed issued it.

Always store the PDF file securely on your computer, as you can reprint it whenever you need a fresh copy, provided the QR code remains legible.
